Opio, Alpes-Maritimes, France

Tuesday 19th July – Journey to Opio via Monaco

The famous harbour of Monaco – Monte Carlo!

Monaco which is somewhere that wasn’t really on our radar but as we were passing close by it was a good opportunity to have a look.

We were both rather disappointed, we were expecting it to be very exclusive but it wasn’t in the least? I guess had we looked at the shopping areas there would have been some very expensive items to buy. There were also some amazing ‘super yachts’ but there were also some very tatty ones too and we decided that Musetta would have smartened the harbour up somewhat!

Views of Monaco!

We returned our hire car to Nice airport and then our very good friends, James and Pascale who we know from Normandy and who have now moved down to live in the south of France, came to pick us up.  This is a very familiar part of France for Pascale as it is where she originally came from and grew up.

Beautiful Villa!

James and Pascale are managing an estate in Opio, near Antibes which is at the foot of les Alpes-Maritimes, it is like being in 7th heaven! A beautiful villa and gardens with a gorgeous salt water swimming pool and various extra cottages too.

More views of this lovely location!

Wednesday 20th July – Valbonne

Sightseeing in this delightful small town close to Opio which is full of boutiques, restaurants and ice cream parlours, we of course sampled some of their delights!

What a lovely day! We visited Port Vauban, the covered market in the walled city which was full of the freshest fruit and vegs, spices and we tried a speciality of the area, a kind of pancake called a Socca made with chickpea flour, water, salt and olive oil and cooked in a very hot wood fire brick oven. It was delicious!!

We walked round the ramparts of the old town looking at the super yachts, not our cup of tea but hugely impressive none the less! Beautiful views of the surrounding area, azure seas and white sand. Lovely little streets and houses everywhere, it was enchanting.

Friday 22nd July – home time!

Another beautiful day but all good things have to come to an end and we leave Opio tonight after a glorious week away.  We have both enjoyed our time in both Italy and the South of France.
